It’s that time of year to make your New Year’s Resolutions.

Ugh! The majority of people today do not even bother to make resolutions, assuming there’s no way they will keep them. Instead of resolutions, let’s focus on goals in five steps for the coming year.

I want to make this an easy and attainable process for you for the coming year. Come with me and follow along…

1. Reflect on the past year.

In order to know what you want to accomplish in the coming year, you first need to reflect on the past year.

Look at all your accomplishments. Are there things that you would like to expand on in the coming year?

What are the things that have been gnawing at you that you would like to do different? Exercising more, drinking more water, and eating healthier  are common goals. But can you think outside the box? Perhaps you’d like to write a book or zipline over Las Vegas.

2. Have a good mindset

If you set a big resolution such as one  to lose 100 pounds in the coming year, make sure you go into it with a positive mindset of self-care.

Be gentle with yourself and celebrate the small victories along the way, such as making a good food choice in a tempting situation.

You can set goals for the various areas of your life, like relationships, career, family, food, travel or adventure.

Just don’t burden yourself with goals that are too overwhelming, causing you to give up instead.

I make a summary goal for each year. In the past, I’ve used Purge, Self-Care and Transition. For 2019, I plan to approach the year with great Promise. These words help me focus all my goals in the same direction for the year.

3. Write down your goals.

Writing down your goals in a journal helps to keep you focused. You can also write them on sticky notes and put them in obvious places as reminders such as on your mirror or computer.

Committing your goals to paper reinforces your plans.

Leave room in your journal to add your thoughts later as you work towards the goal.

4. Make a plan to accomplish your goals.

You will need a written plan to accomplish your goals for the year. Saying you want to learn how to paint or buy a beach house is a goal. But it probably won’t happen without a plan. Should you sign up for a class, meet with bankers and realtors or do some online research? Mind mapping is a great way to make a draft plan to get you started.

5. Revisit throughout the year.

Throughout the year, go back to your journal and reread what you have written. How are you doing? Make a note of it. Always acknowledge your achievements.

However, you may decide you want to revise your goal. Perhaps you have already been able to score that new job you wanted. What’s next?

Rereading your goals will refresh in your mind what you want to accomplish this year.

Even though you should strive to set attainable goals, I do not recommend easy-to-reach goals. That just becomes a to-do list.

DREAM BIG! It needs to be something you really want and have to work for in order to claim achievement.

My PROMISE to you is that if you sincerely follow the 5 steps above, you can definitely transform your life, accomplish your dreams and have your best year ever!

What is your summary goal for the coming year?

What are your detailed goals for the new year?

Are your goals written down?

I have put an easy downloadable worksheet below to get you started, but my personal preference is a spiral bound journal with lots of room to write.

Wishing you the happiest of New Years and a glorious 2019!

May all your goals be accomplished!
